Courts & Legal System
The Isle of Man has its own court system, separate from the UK. Judges are called Deemsters — a title unique to the island going back over 1,000 years.
Court Structure
- High Court of Justice — Equivalent to the UK High Court. Civil and criminal matters.
- Staff of Government Division — Appeal court (like Court of Appeal)
- Judicial Committee of the Privy Council — Final court of appeal (in London)
- Summary Court — Magistrates' court equivalent for minor criminal offences
- Court of General Gaol Delivery — Serious criminal cases (Crown Court equivalent)
Finding a Lawyer
On the IoM, lawyers are called Advocates (not solicitors or barristers — one profession does both). The Isle of Man Law Society maintains a directory of practising advocates.
Legal Aid
Legal aid is available for those who qualify on financial grounds. Apply through the Legal Aid Committee. Not all case types qualify. Tel: 685265.
Small Claims
Claims under £10,000 can be handled through the Small Claims Procedure in the High Court. Simpler, cheaper and faster than a full court case. You don't need an advocate for small claims.
